Human creativity, judgement and responsibility remain central to our work. We use AI as part of development and may use it in production, while respecting the people, rights and creative contributions involved.
Human-led creativity
We value writers, performers, artists and production professionals. AI use does not remove our responsibility for creative direction, editorial decisions, accuracy or the treatment of people working with us.
We assess conventional and AI-assisted methods project by project, taking account of creative quality, practical feasibility, rights and contractual requirements. We do not present AI-generated work as wholly human-created.
Permitted use and approval
AI may support research, ideation, project development, administrative work, concept artwork, character visualisation, animatics and previsualisation. It may also be considered for animation, environments, visual effects and other production work.
Substantial generative AI use in a pilot or finished production requires director approval, human review and checks against the project's rights, contracts and commissioner or funder requirements. These requirements may restrict uses otherwise permitted by this policy.
Transparency
We will explain substantial generative AI use to relevant collaborators, clients, commissioners and funders, and identify it appropriately alongside public material or in credits. We will meet applicable disclosure requirements and distinguish development demonstrations from finished production.
A general policy is not a substitute for a relevant project disclosure. We will keep records of material AI use to support approvals and accurate explanations.
People and performances
We will not use AI to clone or materially alter an identifiable person's voice, likeness or performance without specific permission and appropriate contractual arrangements. Generic synthetic voices are distinct from permission to imitate a real person; their use still requires suitable rights and disclosure.
Rights and confidentiality
We will check permissions for source artwork, scripts, music and performances, and the terms governing AI tools and outputs. Human-created source material or access to a tool does not by itself establish the right to upload, transform or commercially use that material.
Confidential scripts, personal information and collaborators' work must not be uploaded without appropriate authority and safeguards. We will consider tool settings, storage and training terms before use, and review outputs for factual errors, inappropriate content and potential rights issues.
Joint responsibility
Our founders, Jim Robinson and Mark Kenny, share responsibility for overseeing this policy, its implementation and annual review. We will review it sooner where changes in tools, projects or applicable requirements make that necessary.
Questions about our AI use can be addressed to either founder: jim@greatislandproductions.com or mark@greatislandproductions.com.
